Sheer Cliff Scenery from "Shashingo-ga-take Zenjo," the Inner Sanctuary

A sacred site with legend: Kobo Daishi (the temple's founder) once threw himself off a cliff as a youth to test Buddha's protection. The inner sanctuary "Shashingo-ga-take Zenjo" stands on a sheer cliff face, offering a panoramic view of the entire Mitoyo Plain. Located near Mitatsuji Temple, it's an ideal highlight stop on the pilgrimage circuit.

海に浮かぶ小さな島に鎮座する津嶋神社は、古くから「子供の守り神」として知られ、大祭の2026年8月4日・5日の両日だけ、本殿へ渡るための仮橋が架けられます。夏休みに子どもの健やかな成長を願う家族連れが県内外から大勢訪れ、境内は朝6時から夜22時まで参拝客で賑わいます。灯りに照らされた木の仮橋を渡って小島へお参りする光景は、この2日間だけの特別な体験です。
Tips
この神社は仮橋が架かる期間限定でしか本殿まで渡れません。仮橋は板張りで、夜間は特に足元に注意しましょう。大祭期間中は周辺道路が大変混雑するため、公共交通機関や臨時駐車場の利用がおすすめです。日中はもちろん、夕方以降も多くの参拝者で賑わいます。
Tips
About 5 minutes by car from Mitatsuji Temple. Reaching the inner sanctuary requires hiking a mountain trail; if time allows, take the challenge. The temple grounds alone offer plenty to see.
Best time to visit
Approximately 30 minutes. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Seto Inland Sea in the distance.
