This coastline marks the point where the Niyodo River, flowing from the foot of Mt. Ishizuchi, empties into Tosa Bay. With rough waves crashing at the river mouth, the area is known as one of Kochi Prefecture's premier surf spots, where you can watch surfers ride the waves. At the western end of the Niyodo River Mouth Bridge (仁淀川河口大橋) stands “Minami Kaze” (南風), a tourist facility with a café and observation deck offering a high vantage point over where the sea and river meet. Even under the summer sun, the sea breeze here provides refreshing relief, making it the perfect time to recharge before the night of the Otsuna Matsuri.
Tips
The river's depth varies by location, so keep a close eye on children near the water. There is little shade, so bring a hat or parasol. Avoid approaching the water when the river is swollen.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour. Late afternoon, when the sunlight softens a little, is the most comfortable time to visit.
