About this spot

This sandy beach facing the Sea of Japan in Keta-cho, Tottori City, features about 5 kilometers of “singing sand” stretching east to west, with dune land spreading out behind it. It's one of the geosites of the San'in Coast Geopark, with a coastline of white sand and green pines continuing along the shore. Off this coast, scallops occur in massive numbers on a cycle of several decades, and “Kaigarabushi” was born as a work song sung while pulling heavy dredging rakes (“jyoren”) by boat during the harvest. Before the festival, take a moment to look out at the beach where the song was born and cool off.

Tips

If you plan to swim, check whether lifeguards are present and the designated swimming hours. Sunlight is strong, so sunscreen is essential. It's reassuring to check in advance whether changing areas or showers are available.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. The afternoon, when the sunlight softens a little, is the most comfortable time to visit.
