'Suzukko Odori' - Dancing with Bell-Adorned Umbrellas

The 2026 Tottori Shanshan Matsuri runs for 3 days from August 13-15, and on the first day (13th), the 'Suzukko Odori' takes place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., winding through Wakasa-kaido, Katahara-dori, Chizu-kaido, Taihei-sen-dori, and the station-front shopping street. The large umbrellas with bells attached to their tips are a distinctive feature of the Tottori Shanshan Matsuri, and as the dancers move, the bells create a 'shanshan' sound that echoes through the streets. The following day (14th) features the main festival where thousands of dancers perform the umbrella dance simultaneously. The 13th is appealing because it's the day before the main festival and has a more family-friendly and approachable atmosphere.

Traffic restrictions are in effect around the venue from evening, so using public transportation is recommended. For street-side viewing, arriving early for a good spot is ideal. The nights can be humid and warm, so a hand fan or cooling towel will make your experience more comfortable. Check the organizer's announcement for any weather-related cancellations.

Best time to visit

From 6 p.m. onwards. After 6:30 p.m. when successive waves of dancers pass by, it's most spectacular.
