The 2026 Kagoshima Jingu Rokugatsu-do festival takes place on Tuesday, July 28. As dusk falls, the grounds of Kagoshima Jingu Shrine, long revered as the Ichinomiya of Osumi Province, are lit up with hundreds of lanterns, creating a magical atmosphere. Rokugatsu-do is a traditional summer event held at shrines and temples across Kagoshima Prefecture, and the one at Kagoshima Jingu Shrine is considered especially prestigious among them, drawing large crowds of worshippers. The vermilion shrine hall, illuminated by the lantern light, takes on a mysterious appearance completely different from its daytime look.

The area around the shrine grounds gets crowded with worshippers on the day, so using public transportation is a safe choice. Some parts of the stone paving and approach path can be dark, so families with small children should watch their footing. It's a good idea to check in advance whether the event will proceed in case of bad weather.

Best time to visit

From just after 5:00 p.m. through sunset. Around 7:00 p.m., when the lanterns are lit, is the most magical time.
