Tsukuyomi Shrine Rokugatsudon 2026 is held on July 30 (Thursday). As evening falls, the shrine grounds are embraced by lantern light, creating a solemn atmosphere unique to the base of an active volcano. Rokugatsudon is a traditional summer event held at shrines and temples throughout Kagoshima Prefecture, where lanterns donated by local residents light the approach and grounds. In contrast to the powerful daytime presence of Sakurajima, experience the quiet warmth of lantern-lit evening with your family.

Some roads around the venue are narrow, so walking is safer. Footing is dark at night, so hold small children's hands. Sakurajima is an active volcano, so check volcanic information beforehand.

Best time to visit

From 5 p.m. through sunset. Around 7 p.m. when lanterns are lit is most magical.
