
View the Ancient Camphor Tree, a Natural Monument, Amid Rural Scenery
About this spot
A large camphor tree near Ayagawa Town Hatori, said to be several hundred years old. The thickness of its trunk and the size of its branches are worth seeing, and it has been carefully preserved as a symbol of the community. Known as one of Shikoku's finest giant trees, standing firmly rooted in the rural landscape, it quietly speaks to Ayagawa's rich nature and long history. Stepping into its shade offers relief from summer heat and is perfect for a rest.

2026年8月23日、国の重要無形民俗文化財に指定された「滝宮の念仏踊り」が滝宮神社と滝宮天満宮の両社で奉納されます。平安時代、讃岐国司だった菅原道真が日照りに苦しむ人々のために祈った雨乞いが成就したことに由来すると伝わり、以来千年以上にわたって地域の人々によって大切に受け継がれてきました。揃いの衣装をまとった踊り手たちが太鼓や鉦、法螺貝の音色に合わせて勇壮に踊る姿は、香川に息づく祈りの伝統芸能を今に伝えています。
Tips
奉納は毎年8月下旬に一度だけ行われる貴重な機会です。境内は日陰が少ないため、日差し対策をしっかりして見学しましょう。踊り手や関係者の妨げにならないよう、見学場所は係員の案内に従ってください。
Tips
Located in a rural area about 15 minutes by car from the udon restaurant. As it is near private property, please be considerate when visiting. Parking spaces are limited, so be cautious of road conditions during busy times.
Best time to visit
Approximately 35 minutes. Late afternoon when the shade is pleasant is recommended.
