Witness the Traditional Nenbutsu Dance Performance Rooted in Rain-Prayer Legends

On August 23, 2026, the Takimiya Nenbutsu Dance, designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan, will be performed at both Takimiya Shrine and Takimiya Tenmangū. According to tradition, the dance originated from a rain-prayer ritual performed by Sugawara no Michizane when he was governor of Sanuki Province to alleviate a drought, a prayer that was answered. For over a thousand years, this tradition has been cherished and passed down by local people. Dancers in matching costumes perform this grand dance to the sounds of drums, hand bells, and conch shells, conveying Kagawa's living prayer-based performing arts tradition.

The performance is held only once yearly in late August, making it a rare opportunity. The shrine grounds have limited shade, so please prepare sun protection. Please follow staff guidance for viewing locations to avoid interfering with performers and staff.
