A morning stroll at a mountain temple with Buddhist images carved into giant boulders

About this spot

Kasagidera Temple (笠置寺) is an ancient temple partway up Mt. Kasagi, and Buddhist images carved into enormous rocks still remain within its grounds. Known also as a training ground for Shugendo, its circuit course around the grounds lets you walk through nature while ducking under and climbing over rocks. The tree-lined mountain path stays relatively cool even in summer, and visiting in the morning lets you enjoy a stroll in crisp air. It is a spot unique to Kasagi where you can savor history and nature at the same time.

Season & hours

Name:

Venue:

Tips

Tips

The grounds are uneven with sections that cross rocky ground, so visiting in comfortable walking shoes is recommended. You can also walk from JR Kasagi Station, but the road climbs continuously, so families with small children should plan with plenty of time to spare.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. The morning hours before the sunlight grows strong make for cooler walking
