About this spot

Kasagi-dera Temple stands on the slopes of Mt. Kasagi, an ancient temple whose grounds still hold Buddhist images carved into massive boulders. It's also known as a site for Shugendo mountain ascetic practice, and its loop course around the grounds lets you walk through nature while passing under and climbing over rocks. The wooded mountain path stays relatively cool even in summer, and visiting in the morning lets you enjoy a stroll in refreshingly cool air. It's a spot unique to Kasagi where you can experience history and nature at the same time.

Tips

The grounds have uneven terrain with some rocky sections to walk through, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. You can also walk from JR Kasagi Station, but since the road climbs continuously, families with small children should plan with plenty of extra time.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. Morning hours before the sun gets strong are cooler for walking.
