About this spot

Itami Sky Park is a long, narrow park about 1.2 kilometers in length, laid out along the western side of the runway at Osaka International Airport (大阪国際空港). Its greatest appeal is how close it is to the runway: you feel the size and sound of the aircraft passing overhead with your whole body. There are hills, play equipment, and a plaza with running water, so children never get bored while waiting for the next plane. Entry is free, so you can drop in casually to match the timing of takeoffs and landings. Nishiinano Park is only about 10 minutes away by car, making this an ideal way to round off the morning.

Tips

There is little shade, so a hat and sunscreen are essential. The planes are loud, so telling children beforehand keeps them from being startled. Parking is paid and can get crowded around midday on days off. There are drink vending machines, but plan to eat at the airport terminal next for a smooth day.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. It is especially impressive if you catch a busy stretch of takeoffs and landings.
