Dorogawa Onsen (洞川温泉) is a historic hot spring town that flourished as the trailhead for Mount Omine, charming for the atmospheric streets where inns and shops stand shoulder to shoulder in the mountains. There is spring water selected among Japan's 100 Famous Waters, and many people bring bottles to fill. You can spend the time before heading to the gorge walking in mountain air that stays cool even in summer.
Tips
The townscape is a size you can walk around slowly. If you plan to collect the famous water, preparing a container keeps things smooth. The elevation is high and it can feel chilly even in summer, so having an extra layer is reassuring.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour. The cool hours before midday are easiest for strolling
