Known as the world's first museum dedicated exclusively to shadow picture art, this art spot is located in the waterfall area of Shosenkyo. The silhouettes that emerge in the darkened exhibition room are so delicate and fantastical you'd scarcely believe they're drawn with only light and shadow. Centered around permanent exhibits by shadow art masters, the museum also features works by Kiyoshi Yamashita and Yume Takehisa, making it beloved by many. It's an adult-oriented detour where you can rest your body, heated from gorge walking, and immerse yourself in quiet contemplation.
Tips
The interior is intentionally dimly lit for the artistic effect, so watch your step and view at a leisurely pace. It's just steps from the ropeway boarding area, with free parking, making it easy to combine with waterfall area sightseeing. The adjoining shop carries Yamanashi souvenirs, so you can complete your souvenir shopping here. Plan about an hour for a thorough viewing.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Afternoon viewing after gorge walking, combined with a rest break, is just right.
