River play in the clear shallows of the Yoshida River until evening

About this spot

The Yoshidagawa Riverside Promenade (吉田川親水遊歩道) is a walking path and river-play spot laid out along the Yoshida River (吉田川) as it flows through the castle town of Gujo Hachiman. Diving from Shinbashi Bridge (新橋) is known as a local tradition, but it carries danger, so small children are safest playing in the shallows along the promenade. The clear water and gentle current are perfect for water play, and you can even see Gujo Hachiman Castle (郡上八幡城) from the riverbank. It is the climax of a day in which families can fully enjoy the pure stream unique to the water town of Gujo Hachiman.

Tips

Even in the shallows the current speed varies by spot, so never take your eyes off small children. Non-slip river shoes are reassuring. Some areas fall into shade in the evening, so bring something to put on so nobody gets chilled.

Best time to visit

After 1 p.m., when the sun has warmed the water, is the best time for river play.
