About this spot

Mitake Valley (御岳渓谷) is a scenic area spreading along both banks of the Tama River (多摩川) from Mitakehon-cho to Sawai in Ome City. The walking path is open all year, and in summer it bustles with families enjoying river play in the shallows. In the shallows where clear water flows, you can step across stones and splash about, playing freely in nature. The valley, wrapped in trees, stays cool even in summer, a place to spend time at leisure and forget the heat of the city.

Tips

The water is chilly, so playing during the warm, sunny hours is recommended. There are rocky and slippery places within the valley, so non-slip shoes that can get wet are reassuring. There are also points where you climb down from the path to the riverbank, so keeping luggage to a minimum makes moving easier.

Best time to visit

Entering the valley after 1 p.m. means warm sunshine, and the coolness of the water feels pleasant.
