Next stop: Rest While Taking in White Sand and Emerald SeaAbout this spot
Just north of Churaumi Aquarium, approximately 20,000 fukugi trees stand in the Bise settlement, guarding the homes as if in formation. The fukugi, traditionally planted as a windbreak to protect estates from typhoon winds, creates lanes in a grid pattern—an endless green tunnel. Sand paths are dappled with sunlight, and glimpses of blue sea peek through the trees—as if you've stepped into a movie scene. Walk to the tip at Bise Cape, and the sea opens before you with Ie Island floating on the horizon. Water buffalo cart rides and bicycle rentals are also popular ways to explore at leisure, with time flowing gently as if in Okinawa's primordial landscape.
Tips
The settlement is a living community. Respect residents' privacy by not trespassing on residential property or speaking loudly. The sandy paths are walkable in comfortable shoes. While shaded and cool, mosquitoes are prevalent, so insect repellent is helpful. Parking is available around the entrance to the tree-lined path.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. The afternoon when sunlight streams in at an angle makes the dappled sunlight particularly beautiful.
