Standing on a hill in central Omachi, this museum is dedicated to Japan's mountains. Models and exhibits clearly explain the formation of the Northern Alps, their flora and fauna, and the history of mountaineering, helping you appreciate that the canal water you'll visit later is indeed Northern Alps snowmelt. The observation terrace offers a panoramic view of the Northern Alps range, and in summer it's a welcome spot to enjoy the scenery while cooling off indoors.
Tips
It's just a few minutes by car from Wakaichioji Shrine. The museum is air-conditioned, making it a good place to cool off before playing in the river. The observation terrace is best visited on a clear day.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour. A less crowded morning time slot makes for an easier visit.
