About this spot

Toi Gold Mine is the site of a gold mine that was worked from the Edo period until the 1960s and once boasted one of Japan's largest outputs. Part of the tunnels from that era is open to the public, where you can view figures recreating mining scenes and displays of historical materials. Within the grounds there is also a corner where you can actually try gold panning, and searching for tiny gold grains while washing river sand in a special pan is hugely popular with children. You can enjoy it as an activity before sea bathing while touching the history of Izu's industry.

Tips

About 5 minutes by car from Kotoi Beach. It is chilly inside the tunnels, so having something to put on is more comfortable. Gold panning may carry a separate fee, so check in advance.

About 1 hour 15 minutes. Touring during the cool morning hours is recommended
