About this spot

A nationally designated historic site created on the grounds of Ise Kokubunji, one of the provincial temples built across Japan in the Nara period. The buildings are gone, but the foundation stones and the layout have been made legible, so you can walk across the wide lawn and feel the scale of the original complex. Learning that the roof tiles and earthenware seen in the museum came out of this very ground changes how children look at the place. It is an open space with little to block the way, making it ideal for children at the age when they just want to run. It sits right beside the archaeological museum, so it is easy to visit the two in a row.

Tips

There is little shade, so do not forget hats and drinks. The lawn can be muddy after rain, so shoes you do not mind getting dirty are safest. Rather than lingering, keep it to a light walk during the morning and everyone will have the energy to enjoy the afternoon water play.

About 40 minutes. The hours when the morning sun is still soft are recommended.
