Shiroko in Suzuka City has long been known as a production center for "Ise katagami," the paper stencils used to dye kimono patterns. In this museum, housed in an old building, you can see actual stencils and tools, with patterns carved out of many layers of washi paper glued together. Faced with patterns carved as fine as a strand of hair, it is usually the adults who gasp first. Being indoors, it is also a help for families to spend the hours of strong sunlight somewhere cool. Before playing by the sea, get in touch with the handwork this town has protected.

Tips

Check the opening days and hours in advance. The exhibits inside are delicate, so telling small children to "look with your hands behind your back" is reassuring. The surrounding area still has the old townscape of Shiroko, so walking a little toward the next destination is also recommended.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. Spending the 11:00 hour, when the sun strengthens, indoors makes the afternoon easier.
