Nagare no Hiroba and Asake no Nagare in Mie Kenmin no Mori, Komono Town, Mie District, form a free spot that the official Q&A lists year-round as a place where you can play in the water. There are two areas, the shallow Nagare no Hiroba and Asake no Nagare which runs beside Tombo Pond, so you can pick one to suit the day's crowds and your children's ages. The current is gentle and the water shallow, so even a child who has only just started walking can paddle with an adult alongside. Around Tombo Pond you can hunt for seasonal creatures, so water play and wildlife watching go together here in a way unique to this forest. Inside the park there are a lawn plaza, the Adventure Forest, an athletic course, the Children's Plaza and the Nature Study Exhibition Hall, so there is somewhere to go when the kids tire of the water. The park is open 9:00-17:00 and closed from December 29 to January 3, and every facility inside is free to use.

Tips

The opening period has not been announced, so if you come outside summer, check conditions locally before you set out. There are stones on the streambed that cut feet easily, so always bring water shoes. Water off the mountains is cold, so it is safer to get out and take a break before anyone gets chilled. Smoking and open flames are banned throughout the park and barbecues are not possible. The park closes at 17:00, so allow time to change and wrap up by around 16:00.

Best time to visit

About 3 hours. The afternoon, once it warms up, feels best, and since you can enter from 9:00 you can also bring it forward to the morning on very hot days
