This plaza inside Umekoji Park preserves streetcars that once ran through the streets of Kyoto. The cars are not only on display but also put to use as rest areas and shops, so they make a place to catch your breath out of the sun. Lawn and shade are close by, making this a good corner for spreading out a packed lunch. Streetcars supported daily life in Kyoto during the Showa era, and seeing them after the latest rolling stock at the railway museum makes the passage of time clear even to children. Once lunch and your break are done here, all that is left is to walk to Kawara Asobiba.

梅小路公園河原遊び場は、園内に設けられた人工の小川と池からなる水辺の広場です。せせらぎと木漏れ日に包まれた空間で、深いところがなく、子どもが自分のペースで水に入っていけるのが安心なところ。滑り台やプールのような設備はありませんが、その分「石を並べる」「流れをたどる」といった、子どもが自分で遊びを見つける時間が生まれます。例年春から秋にかけて水が流れ、2026年の通水日程は未公表ですが、入園自由で料金はかかりません。京都駅から歩いて行ける立地なので、水遊びのためだけに訪れても負担にならないのがこの場所の強みです。

Tips

水は飲用不可なので、飲まないよう子どもに先に伝えておいてください。飲み物は別に用意しましょう。足元は石や滑りやすい面があるため、ゴムサンダルの着用が推奨されています。通水の状況は日によって変わるため、出発前に公園の案内で確認しておくと空振りを防げます。着替えは公園のトイレを利用するか、タオルポンチョを持参すると動きやすくなります。

Tips

If you buy food inside the park, note that hours and what is on sale can vary by day, so bring a packed lunch if you want to be sure. Taking your trash home is the rule, so having plenty of bags is reassuring. If you spread out lunch on the lawn you will need a picnic sheet. Avoid entering the water right after eating; heading to Kawara Asobiba after a 20- to 30-minute gap is safer.
