Umekoji Park Kawara Asobiba (梅小路公園 河原遊び場)

Kawara Asobiba in Umekoji Park is a waterside plaza made up of an artificial stream and pond within the park. Wrapped in the sound of running water and dappled sunlight, it has no deep spots, so children can wade in at their own pace, which is reassuring. There are no slides or pool-like facilities, but that is exactly what creates time for children to invent their own play, lining up stones or following the flow. In a typical year the water runs from spring through autumn; the 2026 water-flow schedule has not been announced, but entry is free and there is no admission fee. Being within walking distance of Kyoto Station is this spot's strength, since visiting just for the water play is no burden at all.

The water is not drinkable, so tell children in advance not to drink it. Bring drinks separately. Underfoot there are stones and slippery surfaces, so wearing rubber sandals is recommended. Whether the water is running varies by day, so checking the park information before you leave prevents a wasted trip. Use the park restrooms to change, or bring a towel poncho to move around more easily.

Best time to visit

Arrive at 13:50 and you can play plenty before the sun drops, staying by the water into the cool of the evening.
