About this spot

Located just steps from the station in Oyamazaki Town, this shrine is said to be where the production of perilla (egoma) oil first began, and it is known as the god of oil. In medieval times, the shrine oversaw the sale of oil, and the town of Oyamazaki flourished as a hub for oil distribution. The grounds are compact and easy to walk around, with stone monuments and historical plaques about oil that you can read as you stroll. Since it sits at the foot of Mt. Tennozan, the surrounding area still has stone monuments and old townscapes that convey its history. Visiting alongside the history museum next helps bring the story of this land into fuller view.

Tips

It's within easy walking distance of both Hankyu Oyamazaki Station (阪急大山崎駅) and JR Yamazaki Station (JR山崎駅). There is no shop within the grounds, so bring drinks with you beforehand. Agreeing in advance to visit quietly helps everyone stay calm while walking around. Cars pass on the surrounding roads, so hold your children's hands while walking.

Best time to visit

About 40 minutes. Late morning, before the sun gets strong, is the most comfortable time.
