Rikyu Hachimangu Shrine (離宮八幡宮)
About this spot
A shrine standing just a short walk from the stations of Oyamazaki Town. The pressing of egoma (perilla) oil is said to have begun here, and it is known as the god of oil. In medieval times this shrine controlled the sale of oil, and the town of Oyamazaki prospered as a collection and distribution centre for it. The precincts are compact and easy to walk around, and you can read the stone monuments and notices about oil as you go. Because it sits at the foot of Mt. Tennozan (天王山), stone monuments and old streetscapes that convey its history remain nearby. Visiting it together with the history museum that follows brings the origins of this land into three dimensions.
Tips
It is only a short walk from both Hankyu Oyamazaki Station and JR Yamazaki Station. There is no shop inside the precincts, so bring drinks with you. Agreeing in advance to visit quietly makes for a calmer walk. The surrounding roads carry traffic, so hold hands with children as you walk.
Best time to visit
About 40 minutes. The morning, before the sun climbs high, is the most comfortable time
