Kyoto Prefectural Rakusai Water Reclamation Center Park (Aqua Parco Rakusai) Stream
About this spot
The Kyoto Prefectural Rakusai Water Reclamation Center Park (Aqua Parco Rakusai) Stream is an artificial brook 1 m wide and a few centimetres deep that runs alongside the lawn plaza. There are no deep spots, so even a child who has only just started walking can step in holding a parent's hand. A row of cherry trees follows the brook, and in summer their shade becomes a resting place, which is this park's great strength. In a typical year it is open all year round (no regular closing days; closed only over the New Year period) from 9:00 to 21:00; only the tennis courts and the ball-game field are paid, and using the stream is free. A combination playground, toilets and a car park are provided too, so when children tire of the water you can switch to the playground and stay for a long while.
Tips
The period when water runs in the stream has not been announced, so checking the park's information for the day before you set out will save a wasted trip. No changing rooms are listed, so wearing swimwear underneath or bringing a towel poncho makes changing smooth. There is a car park so you can come by car, but arriving early is safer on summer weekends. As it is open from 9:00 to 21:00, you can also plan your play around the cooler evening hours.
Best time to visit
Arrive from 14:00 and you can play right through until the sun softens in the evening, with plenty of light still around 5 p.m.
