A museum making use of a Taisho-era villa built halfway up Mt. Tennozan (天王山), known for its garden wrapped in trees and the view from its terrace. Standing on the terrace you take in the whole plain where the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers merge, and you can see with your own eyes why this land was a strategic point of transport. Inside there is a cafe space where you can rest over a drink or a light meal. The garden has walking paths, so a short stroll after eating to enjoy the cool of the shade is also recommended. It makes an ideal stop for restoring your energy in a quiet interval before the afternoon's water play.

Tips

Check the admission fee, opening hours and closing days on the official website beforehand. The road from the station up to the museum is a continuous slope, so looking up whether the free shuttle bus is running will make the climb easier with children. The cafe mainly serves light meals, so if you want a proper meal, either eat lunch beforehand or bring a packed lunch. The galleries are places for quiet viewing, so agree in advance not to run.
