Mimurotoji Temple (三室戸寺)
About this spot
An ancient temple standing in the hills east of Uji City, also known as a stop on the Saigoku Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage (西国三十三所). From spring into summer the flowers in the precincts change one after another, with hydrangeas in early summer and lotuses in high summer as the highlights. Large pots of lotus stand in front of the main hall, and you often see children astonished at the size of the blossoms. With the mountain at its back, the precincts are deep in trees, and the air feels cool in the morning, which is welcome in this season. Taiyogaoka is about 10 minutes away by car, so it is nicely placed as the first stop of the morning.
Tips
Check the admission fee, visiting hours and the best flowering period in the official information beforehand to be sure. You climb stone steps to reach the main hall, so a baby carrier is easier to manage than a pushchair. There is plenty of shade in the precincts, but there are slopes, so carry water as you walk. The flower season is busy, so just after the gates open is the calmest time to look round.

About 1 hour. Climbing the stone steps in the cool of the morning is most comfortable
