Ten'onkyo (天恩郷)
About this spot
A castle site remaining in the built-up part of Kameoka, on the grounds of Tanba Kameyama Castle, which Akechi Mitsuhide built as his base for the conquest of Tanba. The keep is long gone, but the stacked stone walls keep their original form and still convey the starting point of Kameoka's growth as a castle town. The grounds are managed as the headquarters of a religious organization, so a visit requires checking in at the reception desk. Ringed by trees, it is a quiet space where time passes in a way that makes you forget you are in the middle of a town. Both Nango Park and Kose Shinsui Park, visited later in the day, were originally part of this castle's outer moat, so starting here reveals how the places connect.
Season & hours
Name:
Venue:
Tips
Tips
A visit requires checking in at the general reception desk; follow the on-site guidance for viewing hours and offerings. The grounds are a place to spend quietly, so agreeing in advance not to run makes for a calmer visit. Footing can be unstable near the stone steps and walls, so hold small children by the hand. It is within walking distance of JR Kameoka Station.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 15 minutes. The morning, before the sun climbs high, is the easiest time of day to walk.
