About this spot

This is the riverbank of the Kase River (嘉瀬川), which flows south through the Saga Plain into the Ariake Sea. While the upstream riverbank bustles with the Saga International Balloon Fiesta in autumn, the area around this weir is very quiet year-round, with nothing but wide grassland and a vast sky stretching out before you. Climbing up onto the levee, there is nothing to block your view, letting you take in the flat terrain of the Saga Plain and the distant mountain ranges all at once. The levee path, free of car traffic, is reassuring since you won't lose sight of your child even if they run a little ahead. Saga Prefectural Forest Park (佐賀県立森林公園), your next destination, is located along the same Kase River, so you can naturally continue moving along the river.

Tips

Since there is almost no shade, it's a good idea to bring a hat and drinks and keep your visit short. Always hold hands when approaching the water's edge, and on days with high water levels or right after rain, limit yourself to viewing from the top of the levee. There are no restrooms on the riverbank, so it's reassuring to plan on using the ones at Saga Prefectural Forest Park afterward.

Best time to visit

About 30 minutes. A good short stop before lunch, and especially pleasant to walk on a breezy day.
