A visitor center standing beside the Ramsar wetland Higashi-Yoka Tidal Flat. The museum offers engaging learning about the richness of Ariake Bay's mudflats through exhibits on creatures living in the tidal flat such as mudskippers and fiddler crabs, as well as migratory birds including sandpipers and plovers. Higashi-Yoka Tidal Flat is said to have one of Japan's highest arrival rates of sandpipers and plovers—a paradise for migratory birds. The highlight is the rooftop observation area, where you can take in a vista of muddy terrain filling your entire field of vision, a landscape that constantly transforms with the ebb and flow of tides. Free admission makes this an ideal place to get oriented before heading out to meet the creatures of the tidal flat.

Tips

The appearance of the tidal flat changes dramatically with tide level, so check the time of low tide beforehand. Binoculars enhance the enjoyment of birdwatching. Be sure to check the facility's opening information in advance, as there are designated closed days.

Best time to visit

Plan for about 50 minutes. When the tide is receding, the tidal flat view from the rooftop is most magnificent.
