Maruyama Park Water Play Area

About this spot

The Maruyama Park Water Play Area is a free waterside where you can enjoy playing in the brook inside the park. In a typical year it is open from Wednesday 1 July to Monday 31 August, from 10:00 to 16:00 (Sapporo City's information gives early July to late August). Because it lies in the shade of woodland that continues into the Maruyama Primeval Forest, the charm of this spot is that you get both the cold of the water and the cool of the shade even in midsummer. The flow is shallow, so even a child who has only just started walking can play by dipping their feet. There are restrooms in the park, so changing can be done on the spot. It is walkable from Maruyama-koen subway station, so the way home after a tiring play session is short, which families appreciate.

Tips

The stones in the brook are slippery, so have children wear water play sandals. The trees are dense, so there can be mosquitoes; insect repellent makes it more comfortable. It is open until 16:00, so starting to dry off and change at around 15:30 leaves plenty of time to head home. On some days the water is not flowing depending on the weather, so check the situation for the day before you set off.

Best time to visit

Two hours from 2 p.m. lets you play calmly as the sunshine softens.
