Michi-no-Eki Roadside Station Lake Utonai (道の駅ウトナイ湖)

About this spot

A lake north of Tomakomai, a wetland registered under the Ramsar Convention. It is known as a place where tens of thousands of migratory birds rest their wings in spring and autumn, and even in summer a walk along the lakeside boardwalk brings you the calls of waterfowl and wild birds. A roadside station stands right beside it, stocked with local farm produce and light meals, so finishing an early lunch here leaves the afternoon relaxed. From the viewing points the wide water surface and reed beds open out before you, letting children feel a scale that is truly Hokkaido. There is also an indoor rest area, so even days with strong sunshine are manageable.

勇払ふるさと公園水遊び場は、苫小牧市の勇払地区にある無料の水遊びスポットです。例年6月1日(月)から9月7日(月)まで、9:00〜18:00に開放され、苫小牧市の案内では「6月初旬〜9月初旬」と紹介されています。水深の浅い水遊び場なので、歩き始めたばかりの子でも足をひたして遊べます。市街地から離れた地区にあるため混み合いにくく、子どものペースでのんびり過ごせるのがこの公園のいちばんの魅力です。利用は無料なので、時間を気にせず気が済むまで遊ばせてあげられます。日の長い北海道の夏は、夕方になっても明るいまま遊び続けられます。

Tips

天候や清掃により開放が変更されることがあるため、出発前に苫小牧市の案内で当日の状況を確認してください。周辺に商店は多くないので、飲み物やおやつは市街地で買ってから向かうと安心です。着替えの場所は限られるため、水着を服の下に着せていくと現地での支度が楽になります。18:00に終了するので、17時半ごろから片づけを始めると余裕をもって帰れます。

Tips

The lakeside boardwalk has little shade, so be sure to bring a hat and drinks. Insects are plentiful in summer, so repellent makes it more comfortable. The roadside station's dining area fills up at lunchtime, so arriving between 11:00 and 12:00 makes it easier to get a seat. Yufutsu Furusato Park is about 15 minutes away by car, an easy drive along the national road.
