About this spot

Hokkaido's foremost shrine, founded during the Meiji pioneer era as the chief protector of the northern land. It enshrines four deities: the three pioneer gods—Okuninushi-no-kami, Onamuji-no-kami, and Sukunahikona-no-kami—plus Emperor Meiji. Families from across Hokkaido visit for New Year prayers and coming-of-age celebrations. The approximately 180,000-square-meter grounds, embraced by Maruyama's primeval forest, have crisp, clear air, and simply walking the spacious approach path brings a sense of calm. With luck, you might spot Ezo squirrels darting through the trees, making a visit with young children all the more enjoyable. At the Rokkatei Shrine Teahouse shop within the grounds, you can enjoy the specialty grilled mochi "Hangansama." Since it borders Maruyama Park, your morning visit naturally connects to a woodland stroll.

Tips

About a 15-minute walk from Maruyama-koen Station on the Tozai Subway Line; there is also parking near the grounds. Admission is free. The approach path is wide and easy to navigate with a stroller. Mornings can be chilly, so it's reassuring to bring a light layer for your child. The Rokkatei shop closes when items sell out, so if interested, visit early in your prayer sequence.

Best time to visit

Takes about 1 hour. An early morning visit, when fewer people are around and the air is clearest, is most pleasant.
