Next stop: Trace the making of Hokkaido in one sweep, in cool indoor comfortAbout this spot
This is a large open-air museum where buildings put up across Hokkaido from the Meiji era to the early Showa era have been relocated and lined up together. You can actually step inside the shops, farmhouses, station buildings and schools, so you get a physical sense of "the scale of life in that era" that is completely different from seeing photographs. As you walk the streets, details such as the creak of the plank flooring and the low ceilings stay vividly in a child's memory. The grounds are very large, so deciding in advance which sections you want to see keeps you from walking yourself tired. You can also have lunch within the village, which helps you flow from morning into afternoon without having to leave.
Tips
Please check the admission fee, opening hours and closing days in advance via the official information. The grounds are large and some paths are unpaved, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Some streets have little shade in summer, so a hat and drinks are essential. Certain rides operate depending on the season and day of the week, so if you want to ride, check the day's operating status when you enter to be sure.
Best time to visit
About 2 hours 20 minutes. The morning right after opening is less crowded, letting you look inside the buildings at your own pace
