The Atsubetsu-Nishi Park Water Play Area is a shallow water play spot that appears only in summer at Atsubetsu-Nishi Park (厚別西公園) in Atsubetsu Ward, Sapporo. In 2026 it is open from Wednesday, July 1 to Monday, August 31, from 9:30 to 16:30, and admission is free. Since it stays open for two whole months, the great thing about this water play area is that you can come back as often as you like during the summer holidays. Because the water is shallow, even children who have only just started walking can stand on their own feet and play. There are no timed sessions or queues, so you can get in whenever you feel like it and rest in the shade when you tire, an easygoing rhythm that only a park can offer. It is a gathering place for local children, so you will often see youngsters who met for the first time that day playing together.

There are no changing rooms, so it is safest either to wear swimsuits underneath your clothes or to bring a wrap towel to change under. Sapporo summers turn chilly the moment the sun goes behind cloud, so always bring an extra layer to put on afterwards. Shade is limited, so a picnic sheet and a hat will make breaks much easier.

Getting in from 14:00 lets you play until the sun softens and enjoy it fully right up to the 16:30 close
