Next stop: Visit the guardian shrine of Kotoni, which walked alongside the farmer-soldiersAbout this spot
A nationally designated historic site in Kotoni, Nishi-ku, preserving a home that farmer-soldiers actually lived in. In the early Meiji era a farmer-soldier village was established across this area, and the settled families lived in small houses built to an identical standard. Step inside and the cramped rooms and plain construction tell you concretely how they got through a Hokkaido winter. It is precious that this single house remains, showing a scene hard to imagine from today's Kotoni with its apartment blocks and shopping facilities. The visit is compact, so you can finish before children lose interest.
Tips
Opening days and hours are limited, so check the official City of Sapporo page before visiting. The area around it is residential and there may be no dedicated parking. Walking from Kotoni Subway Station or JR Kotoni Station is the smoothest approach.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes. Early in the morning there are fewer people, so you can take your time
