Nichiren Sect Mamasan Guhoji Temple (日蓮宗 真間山 弘法寺)

Flow of the course

About this spot

This is an ancient temple standing on high ground in Mama, Ichikawa City, memorable for the long stone stairway of its approach and its main gate. The trees grow thick, and even in midsummer cool air flows partway up the steps. At the foot stands Tekona Reijindo Shrine, where the legend of Tekona of Mama, sung of in the Man'yoshu, is still handed down today. The townscape seen from the grounds makes you feel that this area has gathered people since ancient times. Climbing up and down the stone steps becomes a small adventure for children, but on hot days take it slowly and do not push too hard.

Tips

The stone stairway is long, so families with small children should allow plenty of time for the climb. Walking on the side with a handrail is safer. Visiting together with Tekona Reijindo Shrine at the foot ties the stories of this land together. Going over temple etiquette with children in advance makes for a calmer visit.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. The shaded morning hours are the easiest time to climb
