Next stop: Walk a merchant townscape of the Edo to Meiji periods and experience life of the pastAbout this spot
This old temple, said to have continued since around the Hakuho period, stands on the plateau on the north side of Lake Inbanuma. The Ryukakuji burial mound cluster spreads out around it, and the terrain and remains make clear that this area has drawn people together since ancient times. The Iwaya Burial Mound close by is a large square tomb, and standing right beside it you are struck by its height and scale. Surrounded by groves of trees, the air stays cool even in summer, making it just right for a morning walk. It is not a tourist facility with showy highlights, but the quiet time here settles the start of the day.
Tips
The temple grounds and the area around the burial mound have gravel and dirt paths, so comfortable walking shoes are reassuring. Grass grows thick in summer and there are mosquitoes, so insect repellent will keep you comfortable. Parking space is limited, so park according to the signs. Follow the notices and do not climb the burial mound; view it from the outside.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes. The morning, when the shade of the trees is deep, is especially pleasant for walking
