About this spot

This Fujizuka (Mt. Fuji mound) stands on the grounds of Shikishima Shrine in Shiki's Honcho district and was built at the end of the Edo period. It is a small hill made of stacked lava rock, built as a stand-in for the real Mt. Fuji for people who couldn't climb it, and it is designated a nationally Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property. The path from the base to the summit is short, but stone monuments line the way, still bearing traces of the faith of the people of that era. From the top, you can look out over the town of Shiki — a genuine climbing experience for children. Start the day here, getting a feel for how the town of Shiki came to be.

Tips

The days when climbing is allowed can be limited, so it's best to check the open days on Shiki City's official website or similar sources before visiting. The path is steep and made of piled stones, so be sure to hold hands while climbing. The shrine grounds are a quiet place, so it helps to remind children beforehand not to run around.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. The cool morning hours are recommended, as they make the climb easier.
