Tsuki Shrine (調神社)

About this spot

An old shrine within walking distance of Urawa Station (浦和駅), affectionately known to locals as Tsuki-no-miya-sama. Its most distinctive feature is the stone rabbits that sit in place of the usual guardian lions. The spout of the purification basin and the figures in the pond are rabbits too, and simply counting how many they can find as they walk the precincts will keep children absorbed. It is an unusual shrine, also known for having no torii gate, and explaining the reason behind that will spark the interest of adults as well. Although it sits in the middle of town, it is surrounded by trees, so the air in the precincts stays cool even in summer, which is a real blessing.

Tips

There are gravel paths in the precincts, so a stroller can be hard to push in places. A baby carrier will make moving around easier. A simple visit takes only a short time, so it fits comfortably into your morning plan. It is a quiet place, so tell children in advance not to run around.

Best time to visit

About 40 minutes. The cool morning hours are the most comfortable
