About this spot

Standing among the white-walled townscape of Mameda-machi (豆田町), this museum conveys the history of Hita in the era when it was directly controlled shogunate territory. Old documents, furnishings and tools handed down in merchant houses are displayed here, revealing the substance of daily life that you cannot see just by walking past the buildings of Mameda-machi. Being indoors, it also suits the hours when the sun is strongest. After the visit, have lunch near the museum and head straight into the afternoon water play. Seeing the townscape and the museum together brings the character of Hita into much sharper focus.

Tips

Admission fees and opening days can change, so check before you visit. The streets of Mameda-machi are narrow and cars pass through, so hold children by the hand. Parking nearby and walking around until lunch is the easiest way to get about.

About 50 minutes. Slotting it in before lunch keeps the route tidy.
