About this spot

This ropeway connects the middle slopes of Mt. Tsurumi, which towers to the west of the city of Beppu, with a station near the summit, offering about a 10-minute ride through the air aboard a large gondola. As you climb, the fan-shaped cityscape of Beppu and the blue of Beppu Bay draw closer below, and only here can you take in a bird's-eye view of the hot-spring city with its rising steam. A walking trail is maintained from the summit station, leading past viewpoints with a grand panorama that takes in Mt. Yufu and the Kuju mountains, and on clear days even stretches as far as Shikoku. The nature of Mt. Tsurumi also charms with its changing seasonal face: Kirishima azaleas in spring, cool breezes in summer, autumn foliage in fall, and rime ice in winter. It's a top-class viewing experience in Bungo, a fitting way to open the drive.

Tips

The summit is noticeably cooler than the city below, so it's reassuring to bring a light layer even in summer. The summit's walking trail has ups and downs, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The key to enjoying it fully is choosing a clear day; the air tends to be clearer in the morning, making for better long-distance views. Operations can change in strong winds, so check the day's operating status before heading out.

About 2 hours. Morning, when the air is clear, is the recommended time for good views of Beppu Bay and the distant mountains.
