Appearing only in summer at Kijima Kogen Park in Beppu City, the Kijima Kogen Park Summer Water Play Area 「Chapucha」 is a shallow water play area of 1,800 square meters with a water depth of 20 centimeters. In 2026 it is open from Saturday, July 4 to Wednesday, September 23, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with closed days during the period). Its greatest feature is that you can play in a T-shirt and shorts without changing into a swimsuit; with no hurdle to changing, you can slip into the water casually between amusement park rides. At only 20 centimeters deep, children are perfectly satisfied just splashing around the wide expanse of water. The guest center has showers, changing rooms and coin lockers (200 yen and 300 yen), so getting ready afterward goes smoothly. Because it is in the highlands, it is cooler than the city center, and that comfort even in midsummer is this water play area's strength.

Tips

The fee is 1,000 yen per person (age 3 and up), and children age 2 and under are free when accompanied by a guardian (up to two children per guardian). Separate admission to Kijima Kogen Park is required, so budget for the total. Use is limited to those at least 90 centimeters tall, and preschool children must be accompanied by someone of junior high school age or older. There are closed days during the period, so check the open dates on the official website before you set out. Having small change ready for the 200-yen and 300-yen coin lockers makes check-in smoother.

Best time to visit

About 3 hours. Closing is at 5 p.m., so arriving at 2 p.m. gives you room to play right through to evening.
