About this spot

This is Japan's first open-air museum, located inside Hattori Ryokuchi Park. Farmhouses relocated from all over the country, such as gassho-style houses from Hida and takakura raised storehouses from Amami, are scattered through the woods, so simply following the route feels like traveling the length of the Japanese archipelago. Some buildings can be entered, and children are surprised by how dark and cool it feels standing on an earthen floor beside a sunken hearth. The groves block the summer sun, so despite being an outdoor museum it is easy to walk around. It is about 10 minutes by car from Senri Chuo Park, your afternoon destination, so the two connect without strain.

Tips

Check opening hours and closed days in advance. You take your shoes off to enter the buildings, so shoes that slip on and off easily make things smoother. Some sections of the paths are dirt or gravel, so a stroller can be hard to push in places. It is in the woods, so insect repellent will make the visit more comfortable.

Best time to visit

Allow about 1 hour 30 minutes. The morning, when the shade of the trees is long, is the easiest time to walk.
