This is the old townscape of stone walls and white plaster that spreads around Obi Castle. The town has its own local flavors, including obiten deep-fried fish paste and atsuyaki tamago, a moist and gently sweet rolled omelet, and buying a little of each as you walk is the way to enjoy lunchtime here. If you would rather sit down, there are places to eat dotted along the streets. The townscape as a whole is the attraction, so children stay interested just walking. Buying drinks and small snacks here for the afternoon water play is a smart move.
Tips
Rules about eating while walking differ from shop to shop, so follow the posted guidance. Some streets have little shade in the summer daytime, so be sure to bring a hat and water. Crowds gather at lunchtime, so moving a bit early lets you browse calmly. Some shops take cash only, so keep small change on hand.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 15 minutes. Setting off in the latter half of the 11 o'clock hour helps you avoid the crowds.
