About this spot

Spreading out right next to Takanabe Daishi (高鍋大師), this is a burial mound cluster designated as a national historic site. Mounds of various sizes dot the hilltop, their grass-covered, gently rounded shapes blending so well into the landscape that you might mistake them for natural undulations if no one told you otherwise. Reading the information boards as you walk reveals that Takanabe has been a place of human life since ancient times. The walking distance is short, so it isn't a burden for children even on a hot day. The contrast with the stone statues of Takanabe Daishi is intriguing, and the two are well worth visiting together.

Tips

There's little shade, so plan to keep your visit short. The mounds are a historic site, so be sure to check the signage for which areas you're allowed to climb. The grassy areas have a lot of insects, so long pants or insect repellent will help.

Best time to visit

About 30 minutes. Visiting right after Takanabe Daishi avoids any wasted travel
