This shrine has watched over the town of Toyama for centuries and is known locally as 「Sanno-san」. The Sanno Festival in spring is famous as one of Toyama's representative festivals, and even in summer the shade of the trees falls across the precincts, giving a stillness hard to believe you are in the middle of a city. Walking the approach, purifying your hands at the water basin and putting your palms together before the hall takes only a short time, but for children it is a chance to learn the manners of a shrine visit. Being able to cool down in the shade before noon, when the sun is strong, also makes this exactly the right stop on a day with water play ahead.
Tips
Parts of the precincts are gravel or stone paving, so easy-walking shoes are reassuring. Visit quietly, and tell children in advance not to run about. Reception hours at the amulet counter and shrine office vary by day, so check in advance if you want a goshuin seal. You can drive right up nearby, but there are many one-way streets in the area, so checking your route beforehand prevents getting lost.
Best time to visit
About 35 minutes. Well suited to a short stop before noon
