A shrine in Iwakuraji (岩峅寺), Tateyama Town, that carries the Tateyama mountain faith into the present day. Thick cedars line the precinct, and the air feels cool even in summer. It is said that people who could not climb Tateyama once worshipped the mountain from here, and the depth of the bond between the mountain and its people comes through in the buildings and the trees. It is only a short time to walk the approach and press your hands together, but it prepares you for the mountain waterside you are heading to next. This is not a crowded spot, so you can walk at your own pace.

Tips

The precinct has gravel and stone steps, so easy walking shoes are reassuring. Mosquitoes can appear under the trees, so applying insect repellent before you walk makes it more comfortable. The reception hours of the shrine office vary by day, so check in advance if you want a goshuin seal. Agreeing beforehand to be quiet during the visit makes it go smoothly.
