About this spot
Standing in Ashikuraji (芦峅寺), the village at the heart of Tateyama (立山) faith, this museum is themed around the relationship between Tateyama's nature and the people who lived alongside it. The exhibition hall introduces the pictorial explanation of the Tateyama Mandala (立山曼荼羅) and the history of mountain worship, letting visitors learn why people have long revered Tateyama as a 'sacred mountain.' It is a dispersed-style museum, with facilities such as the exhibition hall, the Yobokan (遙望館) observation hall, and the Mandala Yuen (まんだら遊苑) garden scattered throughout the settlement, and the space where you can experience the world of the mandala with all five senses feels like a mysterious adventure even for children. It's a fitting way to close the day, as the great nature of Tateyama you've admired since morning rises up as the setting of a story.
Tips
Admission to the exhibition hall is around 300 yen for adults, and combination tickets with the Mandala Yuen (まんだら遊苑) are also available. Since the facilities are scattered throughout the village, it is a good idea to plan your visit mainly around the exhibition hall, depending on your schedule. The surrounding area is a quiet mountain village amid cedar groves, and a stroll to the Oyama Shrine Chugu Kigan-den (雄山神社中宮祈願殿) is also pleasant. Free parking is available. Check the closing time to decide the order in which you'll visit.
Best time to visit
About 1.5 hours. In the evening, the slanting light beautifully illuminates the mountain village.
