About this spot

This swing bridge spans a canal in the Ikuji district of Kurobe City, and its deck rotates horizontally whenever a boat needs to pass. Mechanisms like this are rare nationwide, and children stare wide-eyed if they happen to catch it in motion. Ikuji is known for the spring water called shozu (清水) that surfaces all over town, and simply walking around the bridge shows how closely water and daily life are intertwined. Dipping your hand into the cold spring gives a very different sensation from the waterside area later in the day. Strolling the narrow lanes of this fishing port town is another experience found only here.

Tips

The bridge turns only when a boat passes, so there is no guarantee you will see it. Allow plenty of time. Some springs are used by local residents in daily life, so follow the posted guidance when you use them. The lanes are narrow and cars pass through, so hold small children by the hand. Check the local signage for parking locations.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. Early morning, when few people are about, is the easiest time to walk.
