Flow of the course

About this spot

A history and exchange facility in Yamaguchi City, created by relocating and restoring a traditional restaurant that operated from the Meiji era. What catches the eye is the great hall of more than one hundred tatami mats; simply standing in the high-ceilinged tatami space lets you imagine the liveliness of banquets long ago. The framed calligraphy of politicians and men of letters lining the walls is powerful, as if the modern history of Yamaguchi had been turned into a room. You can cool off while looking at the garden from the veranda, which makes it a handy refuge during the hottest part of the afternoon. Admission is reasonable and the length of stay is easy to adjust, so it suits a short break before the water play.

Tips

Check opening days and admission in the official information. Since these are tatami rooms, shoes that slip on and off easily make coming and going simpler. Remind children not to run inside. Ishin Hyakunen Memorial Park is about a 10-minute drive away. Cooling off here before heading to the water play lets you avoid the peak of the sun.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. Good for spending the sunny early afternoon indoors
